Meet the Pluralism Initiative
We champion effective media pluralism by fixing resource allocation.
Where Differences Meet, Progress Thrives
Diversity of ideas is the foundation of any successful liberal society. It inspires arts and
culture, drives sciences and technology, and empowers democracies to make informed decisions. This is why we fight for pluralism.
Media Pluralism Is Failing Us
Never before have we been able to listen to so many different voices, whether via traditional
news outlets or in social media. Yet, rather than harnessing this strength for productive
discourse, we're reaching existential levels of polarization, fragmentation, and
radicalization. This is what we aim to fix.
The Issue Is Systemic
It is not individuals, but markets and algorithms that choose the voices we listen to—and
block out the ones we don't. Oftentimes they do so against our interests: Instead of building
bridges and channels for information to flow, they lock us in filter bubbles and echo
chambers, shackling the powers of pluralism. This is where we will apply the crowbar.
How We Pursue Our Mission
Our goal is to build better systems for news media production and consumption. We believe the
underlying problem to solve is that of resource allocation: By changing how funding is
distributed among journalists and which media products receive amplification, we incentivize
the production of the media products that society needs the most and make sure they get the
attention they deserve. Sounds nebulous? Stay tuned to clear the fog!
